ESSENTIALS OF ETIQUETTE AND PROTOCOL FOR PUBLIC OFFICERS

RATIONALE

  • Protocol and Etiquette are the art of ensuring that official and unofficial occasions, visits, meetings, and functions are planned and conducted in accordance with a set of rules that are formally, socially, and culturally expected and accepted by the parties involved.

  • The noticeable flaws and embarrassment at official public functions degrade the outcome of many Programmes and events. Wrongly addressed invitation cards or letters, wrong sitting arrangements, manner of address, and a mix-up in the order of protocol, have contributed to poor attendance, perception, and outcomes of official events.

  • Public officials and Civil Servants charged with responsibility for Protocol and organisation of functions in Extra Ministerial, Departments & Agencies of Government must improve on their knowledge, skills and dispositions in the planning and organization of Events, Programmes & Functions.
  • This course will introduce participants to the ceremonial aspects of Protocols, procedures, behaviour, etiquette, rules of courteousness in society and respect for precedence. It also covers the full range of conventions, rules, customs, and expectations that professional communicators must master to work professionally with Very Important Persons (VIPs) and in high-level government and business events.

  • Assistant Directors.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • analyze the concept, principles, sources and forms of Government Communication and the work behind various communications products;
  • formulate and prioritize central arguments for inclusion in official documents prepared by them;
  • acquire the skills and techniques to demonstrate proficiency and competence for qualitative improvement in drafting and presentation of various forms of communication materials;
  • reduce the time spent in producing communication materials; and
  • produce qualitative Communication materials.
